By coordinating the onboard and workshop activities under one operation, reconditioned components were returned in line with each vessel’s reassembly schedule, allowing both overhaul projects to progress without unnecessary external dependencies.

ONE WORKSHOP. COMPLETE SUPPORT

Onboard overhaul and in-house reconditioning, fully executed by KIMI
2 WEEKS. BOTH COMPLETED

Both main engines overhauls completed within the scheduled dry-dock window.
2 VESSELS. IN PARALLEL.

Proven capacity for large-scale overhauls
Onboard 2-Stroke Main Engine Overhaul Scope
Piston Assemblies & Piston Rods
Piston assemblies were removed and dismantled for inspection and clearance measurements of piston crowns ring grooves and piston rods.
Piston rings and required sealing elements were renewed before reassembly.
Associated component servicing included NDT and hydraulic testing where required.
Cylinder Covers & Exhaust Valve Cages
Cylinder covers were removed and dismantled for inspection of combustion surfaces, cooling-water passages, sealing faces and exhaust valve seating areas.
Inspection included Dye Penetrant Testing (PT) and hydraulic pressure testing, where required.
Exhaust valve components were inspected for wear, sealing condition and dimensional compliance before reassembly.
Cylinder Liners & Stuffing Boxes
Cylinder liners were inspected onboard for wear, ovality and running-surface condition, with honing performed where required .
Stuffing boxes were dismantled, cleaned and inspected, with sealing and scraper rings renewed as necessary.

Crosshead, Main, & Crankpin Bearings
Crosshead, main and crankpin bearings were opened and inspected for wear and abnormal operating marks.
Bearing clearances were measured and evaluated against applicable OEM limits, with bearings renewed where required based on inspection findings and measured condition.
Reassembly & Final Checks
Reconditioned components were reinstalled and both engines reassembled according to OEM procedures.
Critical fasteners were hydraulically tightened, operational clearances verified and final mechanical checks completed prior to engine start-up.
Extensive In-house Reconditioning. Within the Same Two-Week Window
While the onboard overhaul teams worked on both vessels, KIMI’s workshop simultaneously carried out an extensive component reconditioning:
- 20 ME cylinder covers– complete reconditioning
- 15 ME exhaust valve spindles and seats – complete reconditioning
- 5 ME piston rods – restoration using laser cladding
- 20 fuel injection pumps – overhaul and repair
- 20 fuel injectors – overhaul and repair.
Inspection, NDT, dimensional verification, testing, and full reporting were performed within KIMI’s facilities, supported by its in-house ISO/IEC 17025-accredited quality laboratory.
Reconditioned components were progressively returned onboard for installation, keeping workshop delivery aligned with both vessels’ drydock schedules.

The project demonstrates the advantage of combining onboard engineering capability with extensive in-house machining, welding, reconditioning and quality-control resources.
Rather than coordinating multiple external repair providers, the vessel operator had one technical partner managing the complete workflow — from onboard dismantling and inspection to specialized workshop repairs, quality verification and final reinstallation.
This integrated capability gives KIMI direct control over quality, repair coordination and turnaround time, particularly during demanding dry-dock schedules.
